Concordia defeats Bishop’s by a score of 43 – 12 in home opener
The Concordia Stingers women’s rugby squad dealt a solid blow to the Bishop’s Gaiters this past Sunday, with a solid 45 – 21 win. The RSEQ University B section match took place on a cool late summer’s day, that had some in attendance sporting winter hats and scarfs. While strong winds may have kept some spectators home, a decent gathering assembled in the bleachers.
Concordia utterly dominated the opening half of the match, scoring 31 of their 45 point tally in the period. 17 of those within the opening twenty minutes.
In the dwindling moments of the opening half, Bishop’s were finally able to gain a little momentum. A converted try would place them on the score sheet on the final play of the half. The momentum of that play would spill over into the second half. A much more balanced half would ensue and in that period both teams would put up 14 points a piece.
Injuries to both squads set the tone early on. Two players from each team where banged up a little on the opening play of the match. Whether or not that had anything to do with Concordia’s impressive opening twenty minutes is unclear but potentially a factor.
Leanne Duncan scored twice for the Stingers. Five others earned tries while Shawna Brayton successfully kicked five conversions. Taylor Merrithew scored a pair of tries for Bishop’s. Samantha DeVries scored their only other try while Katie Shea placed two well booted kicks through the uprights.
Concordia improves to 2-0 to start the season while Bishop’s drop to 0-2. Bishop’s will face McGill on September 15th and 1pm. The Gaiters will hope to avenge their 25-22 loss to the McGill Martlets in the rematch. Meanwhile, the Concordia Stingers will face Montreal next, in a rematch of the Stingers 43-12 runaway win. That tilt takes place at Percival Molson Stadium on September 13th, at 7pm.
