While the boxing world clambers for a heavy weight unification bout between American Deontay Wilder and Briton Anything Joshua – who now holds 4 belts after dispatching New Zealand’s Joseph Parker, it looks more and more likely that the match-up will have to wait for the time being.
Reason being that Joshua must fight mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin next. The Russian was also featured on the Joshua versus Parker card, where he quite simply smashed David Price by way of knock out. In order for Joshua to face Wilder next, he would have to make an agreement with Povetkin in a step-aside deal, or vacate the belt. Povetkin, it seems, has no desire to step aside to allow the two goliaths go to war.
“I am an obligatory challenger for the championship fight,” Povetkin said. “I really look forward to the moment when I can fight with the strongest in the world.”
“Now Anthony Joshua has four belts. I really want this fight, but I do not even want to think about proposals to box with other rivals.”
